Has anyone been on a diabetic medication called Actose? What were your results? My dr. prescribed but after reading the side effects I did not take it. I am doing okay on the Metphormin.

    Subject: Soy Milk? (Response)

    Hello,

Soy milk can be a good substitute for cows milk. It can particularly work well for those with lactose intolerance.

If you choose soy milk, look for plain instead of flavored to reduce carbohydrate content. Choose fat free or light soy milk to limit fat and extra calories. Many soy milks will be fortified with calcium too.

Some studies indicate soy may reduce risk for heart disease and certain cancers.

Subject: snack ideas and carb limits (response)

    Hi,

Saw a couple of questions that caught my eye. The two things my husband had a hard time finding information on were snack ideas and carb limits. Did some internet research and found out a good rule of thumb is to keep the total number of carbs to about 60 per meal.

Eat three meals a day; do not skip. If you are still hungry, supplement with lots of vegetables. Carrots, celery, lettuce with low carb dressing. Snack ideas -- my husband buys the diabetic cookies, low carb granola bars and low carb ice cream.

I was just diagnosed as diabetic and fortunately the hospital in the area has a diabetic class that I was able to attend. The nurse educator there looked at the Glucomenus and said they were great. She recommended that I eat part of my breakfast, then do my walk and eat the rest when I return. So what I have been doing is eating one carb choice like - a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, go for a 30 - 45 minute walk and then eat a piece of fruit with some yogurt about an hour later.

Also as a snack I eat a 100 calorie Balance Bar or one rice cake with some peanut butter, piece of fruit. Seems I can keep my blood sugar okay if I eat smaller amounts at meals and use some of the carbs from the meal as a snack. I never thought much about diabetes until I was diagnosed. The funny thing is that no one in my family was diabetic and I get it but in my husbands family, his father was diabetic, his aunt was diabetic and he isnt. Go figure.

Wish you all well, keep the faith.

    Barbara
